Glen Peterson

Professor Emeritus, History
glpeters@mail.ubc.ca

Dr. Peterson’s research focuses on the social, cultural, economic and political history of South China and of Chinese migration to Southeast Asia—subjects in which Hong Kong has played a key role for the past 150 years. His publications address topics such as the international politics of the Hong Kong refugee crisis of the 1950s; refugee movements into and out of China, most of which have taken place through Hong Kong; and Hong Kong’s historical role and contributions to the modernization of China. South China and Hong Kong also occupy a significant place in Glen Peterson’s undergraduate courses on modern China. He also retains a strong personal attachment to Hong Kong. After visiting for the first time in the 1970s, he lived and studied in Hong Kong for two years in the early 1980s, and has returned there almost every year since.
