C. D. Alison Bailey holds a BA, MA, and a PhD in Chinese literature (modern and pre-modern) and has researched, taught, and published on Chinese literature, language, culture, film, art, and legal history. Since 1997 she has been based at UBC’s Department of Asian Studies and the Institute of Asian Research (serving as Acting Director and then Director of the Centre for Chinese Research 2003–2011). After working in Beijing for nearly four years she taught at SOAS, London University, and Cornell prior to coming to UBC.

Dr. Bailey teaches Hong Kong Cinema at UBC—a wonderful and fun experience which has inspired her to begin studying Cantonese again (having taken some courses in Cantonese as an undergraduate). Dr. Bailey is also an active Trustee on the Board of The Dr. Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden Society. She is on the Editorial Committee of Renditions: A Chinese–English Translation Magazine (CUHK) and edited a special edition of the journal.
